While Botox is a potent medicine in high concentrations, is used in very small quantities with high safety margins. After the muscle has been injected, its first effects are not remarkable in the first 24 hours and the effect on the muscle will not be complete in less than two weeks. Fifty units of Botox or less are generally used per session. To have toxic effects on a patient would have to be injected more than 2000 units once. The effects of Botox only affect the muscle and not in any way affect the central nervous system or any other body part and is accidentally injected into a nerve or blood vessel. Botox is also safe because complete muscle recovery is possible. Recovery is safe because the human body form new fibers that allow activation of the muscles. History of Cosmetic Use of Botox
Injections of Botox Cosmetic for use started in 1988 by an ophthalmologist and her husband, a dermatologist. Since that time, this team of doctors has performed over 10,000 sessions in their patients. The ophthalmologist noticed that the wrinkles of her patients with eyelid spasms who were treated with Botox disappeared. This led to other investigations, which confirmed the effectiveness and safety of Botox to improve the wrinkles caused by the constant use of the muscles of the face.
In 1996 at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in Washington, a presentation by dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Lowe showed that Botox was useful in improving expression lines of the face. Significant improvement was noted in the treatment of frown lines and crow’s feet known. No significant side effects were noted beyond those already known nuisance injection. In 30 patients only one experienced a significant swelling of the upper eyelid, which immediately disappeared. The effect of treatment duration on the lines of the forehead and the brow was approximately 18 weeks. The degree of improvement of crow’s feet was generally lower than the front lines.

The wrinkles around the eyes caused by smiling, laughing, and gesturing particularly affect some individuals.
