Free radicals are very unstable small molecules (products of the “gap”) that is produced naturally within the cells of the body when oxygen is used in metabolic processes for energy production (oxidation).
This instability leads them to seek an appropriate balance of the electron of the other molecules with which they come into contact, they become unstable molecules that in turn seek an electron, and so on, triggering a mechanism of instability “chain”.
This series of reactions can last from fractions of seconds to several hours and can be arrested by the presence of enzymes and antioxidant substances that interacts with the electron missing, allowing to neutralize free radicals. (more…)
